birdlife of over 250 bird species, more that a quarter
of South-Africa’s total, and is classified as a wetland
of international importance.
Between
50 000 and 70 000 birds fly over from Northern Russia
each year to spend the summer in the lagoon.
The biggest colony of Kelp Gulls in
South Africa can be found on Schaapen Island.
